Dawson, Georgia, August 3, 2014 – Approximately 1500 people gathered in the gymnasium of the new Cooper Carver Elementary School to celebrate the ribbon cutting on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Robert Aaron, Terrell County School System Superintendent, was the primary speaker at the event but was joined at the podium for a time by Ben Garrett, president of RA-LIN and Associates, the construction management firm for the new 113,000 square foot project.
At the event, RA-LIN officials mentioned efforts to return as much of the construction contract value to the local area economy as possible. Funding for the project comes from local tax dollars and the firm worked at buying from area suppliers and contractors to return the funds to the local economy. For the Cooper Carver School they were able to purchase 60% of the subcontractor services and materials needed from area sources. This does not include the impact that construction crews have on the local Dawson retail market as they spend locally while building the school.
The new school was built working closely with Albany consultant firm Dukes, Edwards and Dukes. The school houses 50 plus classrooms in three classroom wings connected to a core building by common corridors and walkways. The core consists of a cafeteria, gym and a media center along with administrative offices. Architect for the Project was South A&E.
RA-LIN is a Georgia construction firm that has served 39 separate school systems and completed more than 150 public school projects. Most of this work has been done, as was the Cooper Carver Elementary School, under a construction manager at risk contract where the construction management firm provides the owner with a guaranteed maximum price for the job before construction actually begins.
